Just Follow Your Heart

This week I read something that gave me chills. “When searching for truth we must start by looking within.” When we look back in history, we see practices that were considered normative and good for humanity. Now we know that those practices were detrimental to humanity. That thought is chilling.

There was a point in which we thought attaching leeches to people to suck ‘bad blood’ out of them was a good thing. Now we know that blood is what keeps us alive.

Our culture right now is having an existential leeching moment where we are attaching the leeches of pop-culture to our ideas.

Truth cannot be subjective. It must be objective and absolute, or we have nothing. I can’t walk outside and say, ‘the sky is blue’ and you walk out and say, ’no it’s neon pink’ and conclude that both of us are correct. There must be absolute truth.

Sadly, what has happened in our culture is that we have bought the lie that truth is subjective. That’s why we say things like ‘when searching for truth we must start by looking within.’ Or, we say things like ‘I have to stick to my truth.’ By what standard are we deciding what is true and what is false? If we are basing truth on our own personal ideas and experiences then it is a real possibility that we could be deceiving not only ourselves, but those who follow ‘our truth.’

There is a statement that is placed all over T-shirts, coffee mugs, and pretty much everything else that we consume. The statement is ‘follow your heart.’ We say that when talking about relationships, jobs, going to church, and pretty much every time we need to make some big life decision.

This is bad advice and a terrible way to think.

I want to shoot straight with you. You lie to yourself more than anyone else on the planet. So, why

would you trust your own heart? I would want something that told me the absolute truth rather than a painted truth that made me feel comfortable. I’m willing to hear a hard truth if it eventually gets me to a place where I need to be. Here is the truth, our hearts are factories of deceit.

If you’re looking inward for truth, you’ll end up falling short because ‘my truth’ might not match ‘your truth’. We need something that is outside of us that will point us to absolute truth.

God’s Word confirms that as well. The prophet Jeremiah said, “The heart is more deceitful than all else and is desperately sick; Who can understand it?” (Jeremiah 17:9).

CH Spurgeon said, ‘The heart is the mainspring of man and if it not be in order, the entire nature is

thrown out of gear.’

The only way we find order is if our hearts have been redeemed from their fallen state and that only can happen if Christ is King of our hearts.

The only way one can have a new heart is if they are born again. Jesus said “…Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God” (John 3:3).

A man with a heart that has not been ransomed by Christ is still undone. His heart is still deceitful. The fact of the matter is a once born man cannot enter a twice born Kingdom. The only way you can enter the Kingdom of heaven is to have a new heart and the only way you get a new heart is to be born again and the only way you are born again is to repent of your sins and believe the Gospel. Jesus said, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel” (Mark 1:15).

If you’re looking for truth, stop looking inwardly, trusting and following your heart. Instead, look

outward to God’s word and trust fully in Christ and follow Him! This is the only hope we can find real truth.
